VM's and LabNet

Diskless VM

We are currently looking at possibility of using virtual machines to boot the diskless client client image on the server with a read/write file system.

Windows7 VM

For Windows7 we are looking at booting diskless linux and then a VM with windows7. With this we could running windows7 with no hard disk requirement on the client. We will still need the ability to support a diskfull client for labs that have unique requirements.

VM Packages

Virtual Box

Works well but opensource version does not support USB

KVM

Works well except for USB support. May be the product of choice in the future. Guest and Host included in kernels >= 2.6.20

Xen

To unusable on newer hardware. Xen kernel is always a few behind the vanilla kernel. Guest supported in 2.6.* but Dom0 not till 2.6.32

Qemu

Does not do hardware extension virtualization. KVM is based on Qemu and does hardware virt.
